Horror remake A Nightmare on Elm Street tops US box office

A remake of the horror classic A Nightmare on Elm Street has debuted at the top of the US box office.

The Warner Bros film grossed an estimated $32.2 million in its opening weekend, according to figures from Hollywood.com.

It beat Paramount’s animated movie How To Train Your Dragon, which came in a distant second, earning $10.82 million.

Fox’s Date Night, starring Steve Carrell and Tina Fey, came in third spot with $7.6 million, while Jennifer Lopez’s latest rom-com The Back-Up Plan took in $7.2 million.

The new A Nightmare on Elm Street stars Oscar-nominated actor Jackie Earle Haley as the new Freddy Krueger.

He is expected to reprise his role as the classic horror character in a sequel, as Warner Bros seeks to extend the movie franchise.

Vampire movie The Twilight Saga: New Moon has gone straight in at the top of the box office chart in the UK and Ireland.

The second movie in the four-part series brought in £11.7 million in its first three days and made three times the amount of movie 2012, which was knocked off the top spot by the film.

The Coen brothers’ comedy flick A Serious Man came in at number eight bringing in £302,985 and Disney movie A Christmas Carol dropped from second to third after taking £2.2 million.

Disney’s other movie Up is still in the top five and in fifth place, Michael Caine’s film Harry Brown.

Twilight shatters opening day box office records

The Twilight Saga: New Moon has shattered opening day box office records, according to reports.

According to early estimates from Hollywood.com, New Moon posted the largest opening day box office gross ever, raking in $72 million on its first day.

That beats the previous record set by The Dark Knight, which received $67.2 million when it opened in 2008, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which took in $62 million on its first day this year.

New Moon also broke the largest midnight opening record, managing to take $26.3 million at the late-night screenings. It beat Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which grossed $22.2 million, and The Dark Knight, which took $18.5 million.

Woody Harrelson’s new movie Zombieland tops box office

Woody Harrelson’s new movie Zombieland has topped the box office with $25 million on its opening weekend.

The new film, which also stars Little Miss Sunshine actress Abigail Breslin, came first ahead of animated feature Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.

Disney released 3D versions of Toy Story and Toy Story 2, which opened with $12.5million and made third place, with Ricky Gervais’s new movie The Invention of Lying coming fourth with $7.4 million.

In sixth place was Drew Barrymore’s new comedy movie Whip It, making $4.9million.
