Harry Potter star Sir Michael Gambon has admitted he has never read any of the books by JK Rowling.

Gambon, 68, has played the Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore since 2004.

He said: “There’s no point reading the books because you’re playing with the screenwriter’s words. Besides, you’d get upset about all the scenes the script is missing from the book, wouldn’t you?”

Gambon admitted that his Harry Potter co-stars Alan Rickman and Ralph Fiennes also haven’t read the books.

The veteran actor took over the role of Dumbledore from Richard Harris, who died before filming started on the third film. However, he defended his acting style after criticism that he doesn’t live up to Harris in the role.

He said: “Dumbledore’s got to be a bit scary. All headmasters should be a bit scary. A top wizard like him would be intimidating.”

He added: “Essentially, I play myself. A little Irish, a little scary – that’s what I’m like in real life.”
