Paris Hilton may have been dripping in diamonds and showing off her legs but her surprise appearance on a late-night US talk show went down like a lead balloon.

During The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien, the 28-year-old heiress perched on the edge of the host’s desk and showed off her pins in a tight pink satin dress.

But her series of scripted jokes drew only a smattering of applause, prompting embarrassing silences between gaffs.

In her sexiest voice, she purred: “Man, the last time I showed this much leg, I was getting a lot more than skill. I just did a USO tour and visited the soldier’s barracks and trust me, I found plenty of weapons of mass destruction. Well I have to go, it’s the grand opening for the new Paris Hilton ride at Universal.”

Holding up a golf club handle, she added: “You have to be THIS big to get in.”

Hilton, who recently split from amateur baseball player Doug Reinhardt, then sashayed off stage to mild applause.

Auburn-haired beauty Isla Fisher is apparently planning some shock-value antics of her own to get Sydney warmed up for the arrival of husband Sacha Baron Cohen.

A Sydney tabloid says the Australian starlet will unveil an "impressive erection" in Taylor Square, Darlinghurst – the city’s gay hub – to mark his upcoming film premiere for Bruno.

Cohen is to visit the city on June 29, for 24 hours, to attend the premiere of Bruno, about his latest wacko reporter character, a gay Austrian fashionista.

Fisher and Cohen have a daughter and live in Hollywood. She recently starred in Confessions of a Shopaholic.

Cohen shocked the MTV awards audience with a stunt in which he descended from the ceiling and placed his near-naked posterior in Eminem’s face. The act was later revealed to have been staged.

Actor Jack Black has decided it’s about time he grew up.

The star, who will turn 40 this summer, said he needed to set a good example for his two sons.

He said: “I am a grown up. I’m going to be 40 on August 28 and so it’s time to put childish things away. This is the new me – suits, ties, adults and grown-up times from now on. I have two boys. I have to be the guy that leads the way, that shows them how the world works.”

Black also admitted he nearly had to call off a show because of a nasty bug.

He said: “Just last weekend I almost thought I’d have to cancel the show, I felt like I was knocking on death’s door. I’ve never had this thing before where it has to get out of you from all directions. I don’t want to go into the grisly details but it was explosive, simultaneous explosions.”
